August Golf News Round Up
August has been another busy month in golf, giving us plenty to talk about at One Up Golf. Once again, we have searched the whole wide web this month, so we can provide our ladies with the greatest and latest news in the golfing world. We hope you enjoy this month’s ladies golf news.
Impressive Debut Referee Performance at the Open 2014
The Open Championship 2014 was held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. This year we saw a very impressive debut performances by the referee, Shalini Malik.
Shalini Malik is a former professional golfer. She played on the Women’s Indian Tour and Ladies European Tour. Malik described her debut at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club as ‘terrifying and thrilling’.
The 2014 Open Championship was Malik’s first major, and she was “petrified” at first. Although Shalini Malik was nervous from the start, she did thoroughly enjoy her debut. She “loved refereeing from the start”, even “more than playing”.
Ricoh Women’s British Open won by Mo Martin
The United States’ Mo Martin eagled the final hole at the Royal Birkdale to take home the Ricoh Women’s British Open trophy, beating China’s Shanshen Feng, and Norway’s Suzann Pettersen by one shot. Martin had been leading for 36 holes. She totalled one under par at 72.
This was only Martin’s third appearance at the Ricoh Women’s British Open. Mo Martin described the 18th as “the best shot of my life”.
Kylie Walker Matches Ladies European Tour Record at German Open
Scotland’s Kylie Walker has matched the record for the lowest score for 36 holes on the Ladies European Tour.
With a successful score of 64 at the German Open, the scottish pro, Kylie Walker will enter day three 16 under par. This is three shots ahead of China’s Yu Yang Zhang and six ahead of England’s Charley Hull, who is tied for fourth.
In-Kyung Kim Wins the Ladies European Masters
With a five shot victory at the Ladies European masters, 26 year old In-Kyung Kim secured her second European Tour title. In-Kyung Kim is currently world number 24. She carded four birdies on the front nine, putting Australia’s Nikki Campbell in second place. Kim said she was “honoured to win”, as it was her “first time playing this championship”.
Leading Golfers to Contest at English Women’s Open Strokeplay
The English Women’s Open will be held at Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey this year. The event will begin August 4th and end on the 7th. This year, leading golf players from thirteen different countries will all tee up at the championship, including France’s Emilie Alonso and Welsh Eilidh Briggs. Previous victors include Charley Hull and Jodi Ewart.
This event is one of the highlights of the Women’s golf calendar year, attracting an increasingly international field. The championship is played over 72 holes of stroke play.
Annabel Dimmock Selected for England’s Junior Ryder Cup Team
The Junior Ryder Cup will take place at the Blairgowrie Golf Club in Scotland, starting on September 22nd and finishing on the 23rd. Seventeen year old, Annabel Dimmock has been selected for the English team this year, along with 11 other young amateur stars.
Ranked in the top 30 worldwide, Annabel will also be representing Team GB at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in China.
Girls Aim for England’s ‘Most Improved’ Title
Many talented young golfers throughout the United Kingdom are heading to the national final of the Abraham Trophy for England’s most improved girl golfers. Twenty girls have qualified on the basis of handicap reduction. These girls will play off for the England Golf title at Copt Heath Golf Club in Warwickshire. This includes two pairs of girls from the same club: Julia Warke and Isabella Homes from Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire, and Mollie Pilling and Bethany Barker from Tiverton in Devon.
