How’s Team GB’s golfers looking for the Rio 2016 Olympics?
With golf being included in the Olympics for the first time since 1904, many pro athletes and fans from across the world are lining up to watch what will be an historic event in the modern-day Olympic Games.
Adding golf back on to the Olympic roster for 2016 was a controversial move from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with many remaining sceptical over whether or not it will prove to be successful. After many big names have opted out due to a summer schedule already crowded with majors, some wonder whether the participants will find success in Brazil this summer.
Gold medal hopes are reasonable for the Brits according to the Telegraph Sport, with Masters champions Danny Willett, Justin Rose and Charley Hull all having the potential to bring home the gold for Great Britain. After much deliberation, Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy has committed himself to Ireland for the Games, meaning that Team GB can’t rely on him to help bolster their medal ambitions.
McIlroy told BBC Sport that his decision to play, even after many other golfers have made themselves unavailable for selection, is in part down to doubts that after Rio and Tokyo in 2020 golf will once again be dropped from the Olympic schedule. “I'm not sure if we're going to have another opportunity to win a gold medal after that, depending on what happens,” he said.
The Telegraph predict that Charley Hull will be one of the UK’s shining stars when it comes to the 2016 Olympic Games, saying that the 20-year-old could have many more Olympics in her if the IOC continue with their plans to make golf a staple sport once again.
