Three-way tie at ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters

The opening round of the ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters, at Buckinghamshire Golf Club has been an eventful one. Celine Herbin, Sarah Kemp and Sally Watson will head into day two with a joint lead of five under par, carding 67. This gives them a strong lead on the defending champion, and world number 7, Karrie Webb, who opened with 73. The day was full of action, enjoyed by spectators and players alike with temperatures soaring to 26 degrees.

Ladies Golf Classic 20th Anniversary

The Ladies Golf Classic initiated in 1995 by a group of community volunteers, in conjunction with the Washington Health System. This year is the event’s 20th anniversary, having raised over $1 million over the years. The event is planned by a committee of women and is open for women golfers only. All of the proceedings is used to benefit women’s health care programs.

The money raised so far has been used to purchase

  • Multiple ultrasound machines.
  • A diagnostic imaging system, which allows for less invasive biopsies.
  • A DEXA machine, which is used for bone density testing.

They have also hired a breast patient navigator, which acts as a liaison for patients diagnosed with breast cancer. This underwrites the cost of free mammogram screenings, which ensures individuals will receive access to proper medical screenings and any necessary follow up treatments, whether they have insurance or not.

This year the competition will be held on Monday, July 21st at Valley Country Club, and the money raised will help purchase “Victoria”, which is a new birthing simulation mannequin. This will give nursing students, physicians and nurses at the Washington Health System School of Nursing a perfect opportunity to practise and perfect clinical skills without any risk of injury.
The Victoria mannequin is programmed to adjust vital signs, for example dropping blood pressure and minimizing other scenarios for the mother and baby. The condition of Victoria can improve or deteriorate depending on the decision made by the student. This will help the nursing students focus on safe, quality care before actually interacting with real patients.

Ricoh Women’s Open Returns in 2014

The Ladies Golf Union and IMG has confirmed that the Royal Birkdale Golf Club will be the 2014 Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship venue. The competition will begin on 10th July and end on 13th.

This will be the sixth time that the Women’s British Open has been hosted at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club. The course first saw the event in 1982, in which Marta Figueras-Dotti won the title. The Championship returned in 1986, won by England’s Laura Davies. It returned once again in 2000, won by Sophie Gustafson. Five years later, the Championship was held at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club again, which saw Korea’s Jeong Jang claim her first professional victory

Birkdale Golf Club has hosted many of the world’s most important and historic golf tournaments, including two Ryder cups and nine Open Championships.

Captain of Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Michael Hadden said that the club is “very much looking forward to the return of the Ricoh Women’s British Open in 2014”. If you’d like to find out more about the event, visit the Ricoh Women’s British Open website.

Sarah-Jane Wins After Dramatic Dash

Reigning English Amateur Champion, Sarah-Jane Boyd has won her first round match at the British Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in Bath. Sarah-Jane had to dash to the course to reach it on time, only just making her tee-time, with two minutes to spare. This didn’t stop her from pounding a drive straight down the middle of the first fairway, and going on to win the 2up. Sarah even joked about it afterwards, saying “Who needs a warm up? Very over-rated!”

Sarah ran into some more problems throughout the day. Her sat nav stopped working in the middle of Bath, so she didn’t have a clue where she was going. She actually had to stop and order a taxi. Sarah then had another dramatic dash to to next tee, as the taxi had taken 15 minutes to arrive and another 10 to get to the course, leaving her 4 minutes to get to the tee and play her shot. It was an eventful day to say the least.
