June News Round Up
It has been a busy year so far and the time is just flying by! We’re in June already and it has been another great month for ladies’ golf. Once again, we have gathered all of the latest and greatest news for our readers.
Eleven-year-old Qualifies for the US Women’s Open
A keen young golfer from California, Lucy Li, has become the youngest golfer ever to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open at the age of 11. Although Beverly Klass participated aged ten, there had not been a qualification stage. Li earned her place in the tournament by scoring impressive rounds of 74 and 68 at her sectional qualifier, beating second place qualifier, Kathleen Scavo by seven strokes. Li had also qualified for the match-play portion of the U.S. Women’s Ameteur Public Links Championship last year, but unfortunately lost in the first round.
Carnoustie Ladies’ Golf Club
Carnoustie Ladies Golf Club is the oldest surviving ladies’ golf club in the world, originally founded in 1873 by the gentlemen of the Dalhousie Golf Club for their wives.
The golf club was operated by the men until 1886 and later had a clubhouse built in 1895. The ladies then had a par three built on land donated by Miss Kinloch. However this course was later abandoned, and replaced by the ladies’ tees on the links course, which had been redesigned by James Braid.
The Gold Medal which is a tournament that initiated in 1878 is still contested keenly by the ladies. Last year the club’s captain, Pat Sawers, was appointed the first female chair of the Carnoustie Golf Links Management Committee.
The Carnoustie club has its own home on Links Parade, opposite the famous Carnoustie golf courses.
