Laura Davies on the R&A Women’s Vote

Ladies Golf News: Female Membership at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club

For the first time since its establishment in 1754, The Royal and Ancient Golf Club has agreed to allow women members. Four time major golf champion, Laura Davies believes it is a “big moment” and “girls will see it as a viable option as a sport to play”. Laura Davies has been a professional golfer for almost 30 years, and believes women’s golf is at a stage now where “it’s only right that at the home of golf, women should be members there”. Davies thinks the vote is a historic moment which will inspire a new generation of players.

The Royal and Ancient Golf Club consists of approximately 2,400 members, all of which were asked to vote via a postal ballot. The vote resulted in favour of the ladies membership, and according to Davies, it “had been a long time coming”! We have to agree with you there Laura. We’re also hoping, like Laura, that the vote will raise awareness and more women will feel encouraged to start playing.

“You’ve got to remember some people haven’t even played the game and this might just give them the encouragement to try it.”

You can understand why Laura Davies sees this as a historic moment; according to her when she was 15, ladies “weren’t even allowed to walk in front of the window of the clubhouse”.

What do you think of the vote? Is this a historic moment in women’s golf? Are we one step closer to being on par with the men? Let us know what your thoughts are in the comments below.

We’ll be bringing you more of the latest news in the golfing world, so stay tuned.
