The women’s rankings in 2015
2015 was a great year for women’s golf as a whole, with plenty of excellent players making a name for themselves in the charts. Here, we take a look at how the women’s rankings ended up now that 2015 has come to a close.
According to the Rolex world rankings, the No.1 ranked player at the end of the year was New Zealander Lydia Ko, who had nothing short of an exceptional year. At the young age of 18 as the year ended, Ko had a great year, being named LPGA Player of the Year 2015 - a year after winning LPGA Rookie of the Year. 2015 saw Ko become the youngest ever winner of a women’s major at the Evian Championship, also becoming the youngest male or female golfer to reach 10 tour wins thanks to her LPGA Taiwan Championship success.
Sitting in second place is Inbee Park, who had previously ranked as No.1 until June 2014. Park has an excellent reputation, often slated as one of the best putters in golf - earning the nickname ‘Winbee’ thanks to her prolific winning record. She holds the most wins by a Korean golfer following her success at the 2015 Women’s PGA Championship, as well as winning the Women’s British Open the same year. It is sure to continue to be a tight race at the top of the rankings going into 2016.
In third and fourth place respectively sit Stacy Lewis and Lexi Thompson, both from the United States. Lewis, whose career is even more impressive due to her suffering with scoliosis as a child and undergoing spinal surgery, had an impressive run in 2015, which looks set to continue into 2016. While Lexi Thompson, who turned pro at the age of 14 and won on the LPGA Tour at age 16, is sure to put up a good fight.
