UK golf clubs supporting Fields in Trust
Fields in Trust is a charity that helps to protect playing fields, parks and, in the future, golf courses too. The main purpose of the charity is to forever protect recreational spaces, including playing fields and sport grounds, so there is the guarantee that future generations can enjoy these places as much as we do. They also try to raise much needed funds towards protecting these spaces.
Currently they have protected 2,600 playing fields, parks and playgrounds throughout the UK, totaling 30,000 acres.
Recently the Fields in Trust protected the Bentra Golf Course in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. This caught the attention of the former Ryder Cup captain, Bernard Gallacher, who is launching an appeal and urging for golf clubs up and down the UK to take part in a fundraising day for Fields in Trust.
Clubs are invited to join the “Golf Club Champions Initiative’, whereby a club can add a fundraising element to a tournament they already have in place to help raise the much needed funds. The charity will provide the club with a support pack including posters, t-shirts, supportive material and a ‘Champion’ pin badge that has been specially authorised, for the fundraising tournament.
Clubs taking part will be added to the leaderboard on the charity’s website, along with the display of the club’s emblem, linking back to the club’s own website.
By taking part in this fundraising charity event, clubs will be helping to protect many more sporting spaces in the UK for years to come. Helen Griffiths, chief executive of the Fields in Trust charity, explains how one of the main goals behind the idea is to protect these sites for future sport stars to hone their skills, and keep these spaces accessible for everyone to enjoy and make happy memories.
The Fields in Trust charity is the only national charity improving and protecting outdoor community spaces, helping to create a legacy for recreation and sport - similar to that of the Olympic legacy. It was founded by the National Playing Fields Association in 1925, and has had many golf clubs in the past hosting these much needed fundraising days.
