When are golf courses quietest?

For some people golf is as much about the big tournaments and playing the best golf courses as it is about the game itself. For others, it is a social activity best played with a small group of friends at the weekend. Whatever appeal golf satisfies for you, it is nice to get away from busy golf courses once in awhile and enjoy a quiet game away from it all. Having a golf course to yourself means you can relax and work on your swing without worrying about getting stuck behind a crowd, not to mention cheaper entrance fees.

The following are some tips to help you experience a quieter game of golf.

Go on weekdays

If you are lucky enough to have weekdays free then you should certainly make the most of it when it comes to enjoying a quiet game of golf. Most golf courses offer off-peak rates for golfers when they visit before 4 or 5pm. Afternoons are generally quieter, so a good choice is simply to enjoy a nice lunch, and then play a game after.

Visit off season

Depending on where you live, the climate could play a big part on when your local golf course is busiest. Going to a golf resort during the autumn or early winter period, before the resort closes for the season, is likely to be one of the quietest golfing periods you can get. Likewise, though golfing conditions are likely to be less than ideal, going golfing in periods of bad or temperate weather is another sure fire way of avoiding the crowds. Avoid tournaments and event seasons

If you want to play in a larger golfing resort, but want to avoid the crowds that these resorts generally bring, you may be able to do it when regional competitions have finished for the year. Once the crowds have left, you might find golf courses become a lot quieter and you can have more luck finding a quiet time to play.

However, if you live in a populated area with a prestigious golfing tournament then you will likely find that golf courses are busier wherever you go. Golfing tournaments will bring golfing enthusiasts who may want to play golf during their stay. If you are looking to play a quiet game of golf in Scotland in mid July, during the internationally popular Scottish Open, expect a challenge. If you know that a popular golfing event is upcoming in your vicinity, you may have to travel to a further golf course or visit during more specific times.

Look for a quieter golf course

Rather than adapt your schedule around when resorts will be quietest, why not go to a smaller, golf course that is generally less busy? Though you may need to take the chance on a resort that doesn't have all of the facilities and quality of ground that a larger golf resort may have, leaving your regular golf course for somewhere a little less known is a good way to find a new place to play - and get the quiet game that you seek.

Ask the golf course

If you are still unsure about when to visit your local golf course during the quietest times then the best option is to ask them. At the end of the day, no one will have a better idea of when the most popular golfing times for a specific course are than the people who work there.
